Sam was born and raised on a farm on the East End of Long Island, New York, where he and his family raised potatoes, sweet corn, cauliflower, cabbage, and strawberries. Maura grew up in New Jersey, moved to Manhattan after college, where she worked for a publishing company, then got a degree in architecture. Sam and Maura met in East Hampton and married in 2004. They bought their farm in 2005, spent five years working on the house, out-buildings, and grounds, and opened their market in 2010.
